Freedom day is celebrated on the 27th of April every year. It is a public holiday to reflect on the diversity and freedom in South Africa since the elections for all in 1994. It is important that we slowly start to introduce our youth to South Africa’s history. Here are a few ideas on what to do with your children on Freedom Day in Cape Town.

Visit the Long March to Freedom

You will all feel part of South Africa’s history as you walk amoungst 100 of these life-size bronze statues. They are heroes in South Africa who fought against inequality and discrimination. The detailed statues were created by various South African artists who wanted to show off their talent and give us insight into historical struggles and resistances.

Dragonfly Tri Freedom Trail Run

Head to Capaia Wines on Wednesday and run your way to freedom. Decide between at 5km and 10km distance. You can register at the venue from 8am. You will receive a medal and lucky draw prizes will happen after the run.

Be amazed at the Iziko Museum

This museum is the oldest in South Africa and there is so much to see and experience. You will encounter African dinosaurs, the whale well, marine, rock art, among many other insightful exhibitions. This is a must do experience.

Visit Robben Island

Robben Island was a prison for political activists during Apartheid. It is famous for Nelson Mandela being a prisoner there and you get to hear some of his struggles. Robben Island is now a World Heritage Site and museum. You will take a ferry to the island and then have a guided tour. This trip will allow your children to learn more about South Africa’s political history, struggles and wins of the past and give them a feeling of appreciation for how far South Africa has come.

Relax at the V & A Waterfront Amphitheatre

The V & A Waterfront has numerous activities and things to do or see. In the middle of restaurants and in the open, they have an Amphitheatre. Sit back, relax and enjoy the wonderful bands, storytelling or dance shows performed live on stage. It is free of charge and happens at various times during the day.

Complete the V & A Historical Walking Tour

The V & A Waterfront contributes to Cape Town’s heritage. You can request an experienced tour guide with an excellent knowledge of Cape Town, stories to tell and places to show you. There is no booking required. The tour leave at 11am and 2pm on a daily basis.

There is an option of a free self-guided walking tour, where you follow 32 information boards all around the V & A Waterfront. The tour starts at the V & A Information Centre. They will give you a free map of the walking route. It takes around one hour to complete.
